Shiho Fukuhara is an artist and technologist who challenges conventional perceptions of technology by blending it with traditional craftswomanship. Her work spans genetically modified plants, smart textiles, and interactive materials, critically reflecting on our relationship with physicality, aesthetics, and materiality.
Shiho’s artistic vision and technical expertise were shaped by her studies at Central Saint Martins (BFA), the Royal College of Art (MA), and Le Pavillon at Palais de Tokyo in Paris. In 2004, she co-founded Biopresence, an experimental initiative exploring the intersection of biotechnology and memory, which earned her a Pioneer Award from the UK’s NESTA.
As a founding member and Technology Integration Lead for Google ATAP’s Project Jacquard, Fukuhara played a key role in developing groundbreaking platforms for ambient computing, an achievement recognized with the Grand Prix at Cannes Lions in 2016.
Through her art, research, and collaborations with HUMAN AWESOME ERROR and Poiesis Labs, Shiho continues to push the boundaries of technology and craft, offering new perspectives on the evolving relationship between human consciousness and the technological landscape.
